Andrew Schlabach

sometimes referred to as the Tiggrr

I’ve always been fascinated by roads. When I was kid living in the midwest, I would spend hours in the public library researching abandoned railroad lines and during the summer my friends and I would have many adventures trying to find these lost roads, following them to discover abandoned mines and fallen trestles. I started riding motorbikes at age 19 when I was in the Army. I immediately fell in love with the road, spending many years  exploring obscure routes and forgotten rural towns. I love riding in the elements, feeling the rain and camping from the bike. Over the years I have owned several different bikes and my motorcycle has been my primary transportation for the last 20 years. In 2003, I bought a BMW 1150GS named StormCrow and I pondered whether it would be possible to ride from the Arctic Ocean to the southern tip of South America. In 2004, I was able to ride the northern part of this adventure with my friend Sheri Barrows and we had a fantastic trip. I always had plans to attempt the southward journey but, as you probably know, life gets complicated. I founded a small clinic project in rural Nepal in 2008, I had no idea that it would flourish into my life’s work requiring most of my time and resources. This experience in addition to polishing my skills as medical provider and as a human being... afforded me many years of riding motorbikes through the mountainous rural villages as-well-as the chaotic streets of Kathmandu. We rely on motorbikes to reach remote areas, providing home visits for patients and to operate temporary satellite clinics. Now at the age 59, I am contemplating what I want to be when I grow up. I have decided to take an extended sabbatical to reflect on my accomplishments and set some new goals. I am loading up my 2016 Triumph Tiger 800 in attempt to finish my Arctic to Antarctic odyssey. Follow me on this journey.  I'll be posting photos, reflections and progress reports.
